Plastic properties of visual cortical neurons in cats

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Analysis of neuronal correlates of reorganization of the central mechanisms of vision developing after interruption of cortico-subcortical connections of one cerebral hemisphere shows that neuronal responses in area 17 of the visual cortex contralateral to the neuronally isolated cortex are suppressed but the functional characteristics of neurons in areas 18 and 19 remain completely preserved.

    Compensatory reorganization of the visual analyzer after unilateral interruption of cortico-subcortical connections differs in principle in the retino-geniculo-cortical and retino-tecto-thalmo-cortical systems: The former, with the passage of time, ceases to play a role in the transmission of visual information whereas the latter becomes the basis for compensation of disturbed visual function.
