Microelectrode investigation of arousal response to various stimuli

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    In experiments on unanesthetized, nonimmobilized rabbits a group of neurons is distinguished in the motor cortex which respond to stimulation in any modality by an increase in their frequency of discharge.

  2. 2.

    These cells respond to stimulation only when the stimulus evokes arousal or activation in the EEG.

  3. 3.

    In different cases of arousal the unit discharge frequency differs. A regular decrease in firing frequency is observed from the beginning to end of the response, and also on extinction of the arousal response to the stimulus used. During the arousal associated with movement of the animal, the firing frequency is always higher than during arousal in response to acoustic stimulation.

  4. 4.

    Changes in firing frequency ran parallel with changes in the frequency of the theta-rhythm of the EEG.

  5. 5.

    On the basis of the results obtained the presence of various levels of the arousal (or activation) response in the EEG can be postulated. Observed differences in discharge frequency of the type of cells described herein and in the frequency of the synchronous EEG rhythm are evidently indices of the level of arousal (or activation).
