Frequency relation of fast brainstem response due to inner ear hearing loss with different tone thresholds

Summary

From 60 patients with different types of sensorial hearing impairment (15 high-tone hearing losses, 15 high-tone dips, 15 middle-tone hearing losses and 15 low-tone hearing losses) we recorded the fast brainstem response P6. These data were compared with those of the pure tone threshold in the frequency range of 500–8000 cps and the differences were matched statistically. Between the single groups we found different relation of frequency between subjective pure tone threshold and objective click response data, whereas the frequency relation within the same group was constant. None of the frequencies which corresponded best (best frequency) was below 2000 cps.

This proves the fast brainstem responss P6 to be related to a frequency range of ≥ 2000 cps; middle- and low auditory frequencies are not registered by this method. In special cases, however, it is possible to relate the click response to a frequency of the pure tone threshold.
