Ultrastructural study of the organization of axonal agranular reticulum inOctopus nerve

Summary

In the large nerve trunks of the posterior salivary duct ofOctopus macropus, part of the axonal agranular reticulum has an obvious peripheral position, analogous to the subsurface cisternae of certain vertebrate neuronal perikarya. Examination of semi-serial sections shows that these peripheral reticulum elements are part of a peripheral tubular network, itself continuous with a more central network of irregularly varicose anastomosing tubules. Possible involvement of the axonal reticulum in metabolite transport or impulse conduction is considered.
