Summary

The crystal structure of ruizite, Ca2Mn2[Si4O11(OH)2](OH)2(H2O)2,a=11.984(3),b=6.175(2),c=9.052(2) Å, β=91.34(2)°,V=669.1 Å3,Z=2, space groupA2, has been solved by direct methods and refined by a full-matrix least-squares method to anR index of 5.6% for 1226 observed (3σ) reflections. Ruizite is a sorosilicate with an [Si4O11(OH)2] linear cluster of corner-sharing tetrahedra; this is the first purely silicate cluster of this type to be found in minerals, but it resembles the [AsSi3O12(OH)] cluster recently found in tiragalloite (Gramaccioli et al., 1979). Edge sharing chains of MnØ6 octahedra extend ‖ [010], and are linked by corner-sharing with tetrahedra to form sheets atx∼0, with the sorosilicate clusters linking adjacent walls along [100]. The structure is best described as a heteropolyhedral framework of Mn octahedra and Si tetrahedra, with Ca occupying the [7] — coordinate interstices between the octahedral-tetrahedral sheets. A brief disussion of “extended cluster” sorosilicates is given.
