Morphometric study of ultrastructural changes induced in rat liver by chronic alcohol intake

Abstract

Stereologic method was applied to the study of ultrastructural changes induced in rat liver by chronic ethanol feeding. In rats given alcohol (40% of total calories) for 8 to 9 months and an adequate diet, the following significant changes were observed: a 25% increase in mitochondrial volume density, a 34% decrease in rough endoplasmic reticulum surface density, a 54% increase in smooth endoplasmic reticulum density. The observed increase in surface density of the whole endoplasmic reticulum was slightly under the significant threshold. There was no increase in fat droplet volume density; this may be attributable to the low fat (7.5% of total calories) and high protein (17.9% of total calories) content of the diet.
