Radiation chemistry of the fluoroolefins

Conclusions
- 1.
A study has been made of the radiation chemistry of the lower fluoroolefins under β and γ irradiation. It has been shown that the principal reaction here is a high-yield radical polymerization. Radiolysis of fluoroolefins occurs along with polymerization.
- 2.
A study has also been made of the radical radiational polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, and vinyl and vinylidene fluorides. It has been shown that heterogeneous radiational polymerization of the fluoroethylenes proceeds through a radical mechanism.
The rate of radiational polymerization of these compounds falls off in the order CF2=CF2>CF2=CFH>CF2=CH2>CFH=CHa>CH2=CH2.
The validity of this ordering was confirmed by kinetic studies on graft polymerization of ethylene and the fluoroethylenes on an irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 3.
The principal characteristics of the radiational polymerization of the fluoroethylenes have been established and it has been shown that these are determined by the action of the radiation, the presence of fluorine atoms in the molecule, and the conditions under which the polymerization is carried out.
Certain features of the radiational polymerization of these compounds have been correlated with the results of quantum-chemical calculations.
