Influence of solvents on the properties of complex compounds of ruthenium in the oxidation of styrene

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    The change in the rate of oxidation of styrene, catalyzed by RuCl2(PPh3)3 in various solvents, is not correlated with the change in the dielectric permeability of the medium.

  2. 2.

    In solvents that are good complex formers, the rate of oxidation of styrene drops as a result of the formation of inactive complexes of the catalyst with the solvent.

  3. 3.

    In the oxidation of styrene in chlorobenzene in the presence of additions of pyridine, pyridine complexes of ruthenium, inhibiting the oxidation of styrene, are formed.

  4. 4.

    In chlorine-containing solvents (tetrachloroethane, chloroform), a new form of the catalyst is formed, in the presence of which the rate and selectivity of the oxidation of styrene increase greatly.
