Comparative study of polymerization reactions of 1,2,5-orthobenzoyl-3-O-acetyl-β-L-arabinofuranose, catalyzed by mercuric bromide and initiated by carbonium ions

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    1,2,5-Orthobenzoyl-3-O-acetyl-β-L-arabinofuranose when catalyzed with mercuric bromide in nitromethane, in the presence of an alcohol-initiator, enters into two competing reactions; rearrangement to arabinose anhydrides and polymerization on the alcohol-initiator.

  2. 2.

    When the alcohol-initiator (cellulose 2,3-dicarbanilate) has a low reactivity the polymerization is almost completely suppressed by the anhydrization.

  3. 3.

    We were the first to effect the cationic polymerization of 1,2,5-orthobenzoyl-3-O-acetyl-β-L-arabinofuranose, initiated by triphenylcarbonium fluoborate.
