Magnetoelastic coupling between sound waves in ferromagnetic crystals

Abstract

Under certain conditions the ultrasound pulse technique yields echo patterns from nickel single crystals, which are modulated in amplitude by a period dependent on the magnetizing field. The effect is interpreted under the assumption that energy flows back and forth between two transverse sound waves polarized perpendicular to each other and that eddy currents are suppressed.
