Investigation of the hydrolysis of the acetal bond in acid medium in compounds serving as models for some modified celluloses

Summary

  1. 1.

    The acid hydrolysis of Β-methylcellobioside, tetraaldehydo-Β -methylcellobioside, and the hexaalcohol of Β -methylcellobioside has been studied.

  2. 2.

    The 1–4 acetal bond in celluloses having two unchanged rings in succession of the type of dialdehydocellulose and dialcoholcellulose is less stable in acid medium than that in the unchanged cellulose (Ia).

  3. 3.

    The formation of COOH, CHO, and CH2OH groups in the α-position to the acetal bond leads to a weakening of the stability of this bond in acid medium in the order CH2H>COOH>CHO.
