Summary

  1. 1.

N-(l-Isopropoxyethyl)caprolactam was synthesized from caprolactam and 1-chloroethyl isopropyl ether.

  2. 2.

The thermal decomposition of some N-(l-alkoxyethyl)caprolactams at 200–280° was investigated. It was shown that the corresponding alcohol and N-vinylcaprolactam were formed, and the yield of the latter was increased when the decomposition was carried out in presence of hydroquinone (1%); it then attained 80%.

  3. 3.

When N-(1-alkoxyethyl)lactams are heated in presence of a little concentrated hydrochloric acid, they are partially hydrolyzed.
