Conclusions

  1. 1.

The rate of decomposition of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) was measured in aqueous, benzene, and n-butanol solutions at 100–150°. The reaction rate constants were calculated.

  2. 2.

Among the reaction products we detected: tert-butanol, acetone, and methanol. The yield of tert-butanol increases from 10% (in water) to 55% (in n-butane). The yield of acetone drops in the series: water > benzene > n-butane.

  3. 3.

The change in the rate of decomposition of TBHP from a glass to a metallic reactor is associated with the nature of the wall of the reactor. The change in the composition of the decomposition products of TBHP from one solvent to another is explained from the standpoint of competition of the radical-chain and molecular pathways of the decomposition of TBHP.
