In a study of the composition of the mixtures formed in the reactions of ortho esters with vinyl ethers in presence of zinc chloride or boron trifluoride etherate the method of gas-liquid chromatography was used. The chromatographic column contained a silicone elastomer supported on sodium chloride.
The conditions were determined for the gas-liquid chromatography of acetals and some carbonyl compounds, and their relative retention times were determined.
Under the given conditions, not only did addition of ortho esters to vinyl ethers occur, but also decomposition of the ortho esters, their self-condensation, and their condensation with normal esters.
