Conclusions

  1. 1.

When heated or exposed to UV radiation, N-alkylidenealkylamines are isomerized in accordance with the scheme: RCH=NCH2R′ → RCH2N=CHR′. The migration of the C=N bond readily goes in the direction of the longer chain, and to a small extent it also goes in the reverse direction.

  2. 2.

The isomerization RCH=NCH2CHR2′ → RCH2NHCH=CHR2′ with formation of vinylamines does not occur under these conditions.

  3. 3.

When heated, N-alkylidenealkylamines are dimerized to a considerable extent.

  4. 4.

Alkaline agents (t-C4H9OK, KOH) stabilize the position of the double bond and simultaneously restrain the dimerization of N-alkylidenealkylamines.
