Measurements of the coefficient of combination of small ions with aerosol particles

Summary

The equilibrium small ion concentration (n) was measured in aerosols for various ionization rates (q) and particle concentrations (Z). The results agree with the formulaq=bZn+αn 2. These experiments were carried out with different particle sizes and the results provided a series of values of the combination coefficientb. The size of the particles was determined by the diffusion box method and the diameter (d) ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 microns. The results fitted an empirical formulab=0.29d.
