Conclusions
- 1.
By the equilibrium polycondensation method homogeneous and mixed 4,4′- and 2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic polyesters of various dihydric phenols (dian, phenolphthalein, phenolphthalein anilide, xylenolphthalein, and “phenoldiphenein”) were synthesized.
- 2.
4,4′-Biphenyldicarboxylic polyesters have higher softening points than the corresponding terephthalic polyesters, but still retain their solubility in organic solvents, which opens up possibilities in the production of films, fibers, and paints from solutions of these polyesters.
- 3.
The effects of the structures of the reactants on the physical properties of the biphenyldicarboxylic polyesters of dihydric phenols which they form are discussed.
- 4.
Homogeneous and mixed 4,4′-biphenyldicarboxylic polyesters form strong transparent films from solution, and these retain considerable strength at 290°.
