By the condensation of 1,1,1-trifluoro- and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoro-2-nitroethanes with formaldehyde in presence of alkalies fluorine-containing nitro alcohols and diols were obtained.

In an acid alcoholic medium under the conditions of the Mannich reaction 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-nitroethane forms the corresponding 3-alkoxy-1,1,1-trifluoro-2-nitropropanes.
