Preparation of trans 1,4-butenediol from 1,3-butadiene

Summary

  1. 1.

    Trans 1,4-butenediol was prepared in good yield from 1,3-butadiene by the use of the method of Thiele and Valette.

     
  2. 2.

    Use of lower temperatures (−30 to −35°) in the bromination permits preparation of a purer 1,4-dibromide.

     
  3. 3.

    Conditions for an efficient synthesis are described.
