Conclusions

  1. 1.

    A cyclic heat treatment schedule has substantial advantages over an isothermal cooling treatment and the conventional slow cooling.

  2. 2.

    The use of the cyclic cooling scheme enables us to:

    1. (a)

      initiate the decomposition of the undercooled austenite in the intermediate temperature range and finish it at elevated temperatures in a range where the decomposition products have a high plasticity;

    2. (b)

      remove all excess dissolved hydrogen at elevated temperatures;

    3. (c)

      improve the homogeneity of the microstructure of the steel thereby improving the mechanical properties;

    4. (d)

      shorten the time during which the furnace equipment is engaged.
