Abstract
A cyclization reaction has been observed in which thiophene is produced from acetylene and sulfur co-adsorbed on the Pd(111) surface. As in the case of acetylene trimerization to benzene the reaction yielding thiophene can proceed via an intermediate species of stoichiometry C4H4. The ability of the reaction intermediate to extract sulfur from the surface varies between the two phases of adsorbed sulfur that can exist on the Pd(111) surface.
