The psychiatrist in neonatology: A new frontier

Abstract

Premature and low birth weight infants often develop emotional and mental difficulties due to the overwhelming pain produced by the techniques used to keep them alive. Psychiatric intervention in the Intensive Care Nursery would be invaluable in helping infants, parents, and medical staff to cope with the effects of this pain both in the hospital and after discharge.
