Structural changes in fibres and films from polytetrafluoroethylene upon γ-radiation

It has been found that γ-irradiation of fibres and oriented films of polytetrafluoroethylene in air leads to shrinkage of the specimens, which is replaced by an elongation on increase in the absorbed dose.

The effect of shrinkage and subsequent elongation depends on the state of the specimens: shrinkage is increased upon increase in the stretch ratio and diminishes as a result of preliminary annealing.

The behavior of oriented polytetrafluoroethylene upon irradiation is explained from the position of a change in molecular and supermolecular structure.
