Summary
A simple gas-chromatographic method for the determination of 3-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropionaldehyde (hydroxypivalaldehyde) in reaction mixtures is described. These mixtures contain hydroxypivalaldehyde mainly as the thermolabile dimer, in addition condensation products with formaldehyde or isobutyraldehyde are also present. Accordingly, a direct gas-chromatographic analysis is not possible. The reaction equilibrium can be shifted quantitatively towards the monomeric aldehydes by formation of the oxime derivatives, and hydroxypivalaldehyde can be determined as TMS-derivative of the corresponding oxime. The relative standard deviation is between ±0.6% and ±1.0%.
