Composition of the fungal flora of Syrian soils

Abstract

Eighty-one osmophilic species in addition to 2 varieties which belong to 31 genera were identified from 40 soil samples collected from different agricultural places in Syria on 40% sucrose-Czapek's agar at 28 ° C. The most frequent genera were Aspergillus (20 species + 2 varieties), Penicillium (19 species) and Rhizopus (1 species) which emerged in 100%, 90% and 55% of the samples comprising 41.86%, 37.98% and 5.03% of total fungi, respectively. From the preceding genera A. amstelodami, A. niger, P. notatum, P. albidum, P. citrinum and R. stolonifer were the most common and encountered in 50–72.5% of the samples contributing 5.03–11.55% of total fungi.

Five genera were recovered in moderate occurrence namely, Fusarium (4 species), Alternaria (3 species), Ulocladium (3 species), Drechslera (1 species) and Mucor (1 species) which occurred in 25–45% of the samples constituting 1.37–3.18% of total fungi.
