Das Ommochrom I als wahrscheinliche Vorstufe des Ommins in der Ommochromsynthese von Plodia interpunctella und Ephestia kühniella

The ommochrome I as a probable precursor of ommin in ommochrome synthesis of Plodia interpunctella and Ephestia kühniella

    The action of concentrated formic acid on the ommin of the eyes of Plodia interpunctella and Ephestia kühniella (wild type) was studied. Heads of these species were incubated in the acid for varying periods: 1 min, 1 hour, and 1, 2, 5, 10 and 15 days, and the extracts were analysed by paper chromatography.

    The results show that in both species there is an increase in the concentration of ommochrome I and a parallel decrease in the concentration of ommin after the first day of incubation. This apparent conversion of ommin into ommochrome I continues to increase until the fifth day, when only a small quantity of ommin remains.

    Furthermore, the results are compatible with the presence of a common substrate for ommochromes and for the pteridines.

    Extracts containing a high concentration of ommin were chromatographed and the substance was eluted from the chromatogram with concentrated formic acid. The incubation of pure ommin in the acid was allowed to proceed for 1 hour, and 1, 5 and 10 days. At the end of 1 hour the ommin was already totally converted into ommochrom I and into another substance whose R F value and fluorescence correspond to those of kynurenine.

    The results suggest that normally the ommochrom I is the precursor of ommin.
