Summary
The effect of HC-3 on the rate of acetyl choline synthesis in growing Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5 and on the activity of the isolated bacterial choline acetylase has been investigated.
HC-3 in molar concentrations up to twice the choline concentration in the medium was without an effect in both systems. There was also no influence on the rate of growth. The concentration of HC-3 used was limited by the fact that higher amounts interfered with the estimation of acetyl choline on the frog rectus preparation.
It is concluded that in Lactobacillus arabinosus neither the choline acetylase nor the choline transfer through the bacterial membrane is inhibited by HC-3.
