High-resolution ultraviolet solar observations from sounding rockets and spacelab

High spatial (∼1″) and temporal (20 s) resolution UV spectroscopy of the Sun has been carried out with a new instrument flown on sounding rockets. These observations reveal a multitude of new highly energetic phenomena in the outer solar atmosphere which may play a decisive rôle in the mechanical energy balance of the chromosphere, transition zone and corona.
