The acceleration of charged particles in interplanetary shock waves

Abstract

The theory and observations of energetic ion acceleration in interplanetary shock waves is reviewed. The shock acceleration of the solar wind plasma and particle transport effects are discussed. Suggestions are offered for future research in shock acceleration physics.
