Abstract

A problem is considered concerning the variability of the heating parameters of LaB6 disk cathodes in welding electron-beam guns, which is associated with the different emission characteristics of the cathodes and the mounting features of the main cathode. A method for preliminarily assessing the cathode quality is proposed based on plotting the curves of the emission current depending on the heating power. A technique for determining electron work function with the use of the full current method for the evaluation of the cathode-emission characteristics is considered. It is established that the heating modes and the mounting features of a main cathode made of LaB6 can exert a significant effect on the emission characteristics of the main cathode.
