Calculation of power losses in diodes of a bridge rectifier with active-capacitive load

Abstract

This article presents analytical relations for a more accurate calculation of conduction power losses in the diodes of a single-phase bridge rectifier with an active-capacitive load possessing a power of up to 200 W based on the diode parameters. The existing methods of the analytical calculation of conduction power losses in the diodes are not precise enough. The error in the power losses is reduced both by using more accurate SPICE diode models compared to the piecewise linear model and by taking into account the losses due to the reverse current passage and sawtooth shapes of currents through the diodes of the bridge rectifier. The increase in the accuracy of calculations is confirmed by comparison of calculation results obtained by existing and proposed analytical relations with the results of circuit simulation using the HSPICE program. The error amount of power losses, which is obtained by the proposed relations, does not exceed 5%, which is in the range of a real diode parameter deviation of the bridge rectifier. Calculations of power losses by the known analytical expressions can give an error of more than 50%. The derived analytical expressions can be used in the development of high-efficiency power sources in electronic equipment.
