Abstract

General laws of the variation in coal properties are presented. The petrographic properties of coal samples at different metamorphic stages are compared, on the basis of Kuznetsk Basin D, Zh, K, and SS coal. We note, in particular, the petrographic features of coal of moderate metamorphic development; this category includes the coal that is most valuable for coking and also the most dangerous to mine. At the Coal Institute, Federal Research Center of Coal and Coal Chemistry, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, special equipment has been developed for analysis of the gas liberation from coal beds, as well as corresponding software permitting the selection of effective approaches to decreasing gas hazards in mining.
