Evaluation of the Physical-Chemical Properties and Thermal Treatment of Coking

Abstract

Coking is obtained from the Moroccan refinery, which has mainly experienced a serious problem of the coking formation inside packed beds columns. The calcined petroleum coke properties need to meet the specifications for aluminum anode-grade coke. The aim of the present paper is to evaluate the physical-chemical characteristics of coking formed inside petrochemical distillation columns before and after thermal treatment. Coking undergoes additional thermal processing to produce calcined coking. Coking properties evaluated are: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, metals (Cu, Cr, Zn, Fe, V, Mo, Zr, W, Mg), weigh loss, real density, and calorific value. The results of this study confirm that the calcined coking can be used as a good material for making carbon anodes.
