Abstract

Porous hydroxyapatite (HA) as a drug carrier in drug delivery systems has been widely concerned. Three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) HA and 3DOM Zn-doped HA (Zn–HA) for drug delivery systems were successfully prepared to improve its amoxicillin loading and release rate. Effect of Zn doping amount on the 3DOM morphology and amoxicillin delivery properties of the HA were investigated. In the drug delivery test of amoxicillin, the prepared 3DOM Zn–HA (1 mol%) had a higher amoxicillin loading, and the drug loading of amoxicillin reached 101.4 mg g−1. The release rate of amoxicillin from the 3DOM Zn–HA (1 mol%) in the first 5 h was about 42.58%, which was significantly lower than that of pure 3DOM HA (55.37%). The 3DOM Zn–HA was expected to be a promising drug carrier for the biomedical field, though more detailed pre-clinical studies were necessary to verify these observations.
