Abstract—
Ethanol withdrawal causes impairments in brain neurotransmitter systems. This causes pathological craving for alcohol. It is suggested that the type 2 corticotropin-releasing factor receptor (CRFR2) is involved in the mechanism of alcohol craving. This study has shown that during alcohol withdrawal, the level of CRFR2 mRNA in the ventral tegmental region of the brain significantly increased on day 7 of alcohol withdrawal in comparison with the control group. This suggests possible involvement of CRFR2 in the modulation of dopaminergic and GABAergic neurons in the ventral tegmental region of the brain.
