Abstract

Synthesis of latex based on polystyrene/poly(butyl acrylate) with layered silicate using emulsion polymerization procedure is described. In order to make the organic modified montmorillonite (Cloisite 30B) more compatible with polymer matrix, it was reacted with vinyltricholorosilane as a coupling agent to replace the edge hydroxyl groups of the layered silicate with a vinyl moiety. XRD and scanning electron microscopy were applied to study the interlayer and surface changes of the clay in the prepared material. Exfoliated and intercalated nanocomposites were obtained for clay content of 0.3–1.0% while agglomeration was occurred at higher clay loadings. The nanolattices were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.
