Abstract

Two morphological forms of larvae of Spirontocaris ochotensis (family Thoridae) in zoeal stages I–VI have been isolated from plankton. The main difference in the larvae of this species from the larvae of the other species of the genus Spirontocaris is the absence of a rostrum at all zoeal stages. The first form corresponds to the description of the larvae of S. ochotensis from the Gulf of Alaska. The second form differs in the larger size of zoeae II–IV, more numerous spines at the anteroventral margin of the carapace, more numerous aesthetascs in zoeae I–II, fewer setae on the scaphognathite of zoea I, more numerous setae on the basial endite of the maxillule in zoeae II–VI, more numerous setae on the coxal endite of the maxillule in zoeae II–VI, longer spines on the pleonal somites, and an earlier segmentation of flagellums of the antennule. It has been suggested that the second form is a subspecies of S. ochotensis that was previously described as S. makarovi spatula Kobjakova, 1936.
