Abstract
The article presents a brief historical background on the development and current state of fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of image analysis and pattern recognition, carried out at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and at the leading universities of Belarus. The most important results of these studies are presented and their applied aspects are characterized.

In this issue, the journal begins publishing a series of articles on “The world’s leading centers for image analysis, pattern recognition, and artificial intelligence. The works of leading scientists.” The materials presented in this issue characterize the main results and origins of the development of this direction by scientists of the Republic of Belarus.
Sergey V. Ablameyko. Born in 1956. DipMath in 1978, PhD in 1984, D.Sc. in 1990, Prof. in 1992. Rector (President) of Belarusian State University from 2008 to 2017 and Professor at BSU since 2017. He is on the Editorial Board of Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis, Supercomputers, and many other international and national journals. He is a Fellow of International Association for Patter Recognition, Academician of Belarusian Engineering Academy, Academician of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academician of the European Academy, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Russian Space Academy, and many others. He was a First Vice-President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) (2006–2008) and President of Belarusian Association for Image Analysis and Recognition. He is the Chairman of the BSU Academic Council that awards PhD and D.Sc. degrees. He was awarded the State Prize of Belarus (the highest national scientific award) in 2002, Skoryna Belarusian Medal, Russian Award of Friendship, and many other awards. His scientific interests image analysis, pattern recognition, digital geometry, knowledge-based systems, geographical information systems, and medical imaging. He is the author of more than 600 papers.
Victor V. Krasnoproshin. Born in 1947. Graduated from Belarusian State University in 1974. Received PhD degree in 1979 and DSc degree in 2007. Currently he is a full professor at Belarusian State University and the Head of the Information Management Systems Department, Faculty of Applied Mathematics & Computer Sciences. Research interests: artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, image analyzes, computer graphics, information and computing technologies. Author of more than 300 papers, including 9 books.
