Abstract
The electronic absorption and reflectance spectra of Pr(III) ions in molten alkali metal fluorides have been studied. For electronic transitions in the series LiF → NaF → KF → CsF, a long-wavelength shift is observed (nephelauxetic effect). The intensity of the hypersensitive transition 3 H 4 → 3 P 2 (ΔJ = 2) depends on the covalence of the bonds in PrF3- 6 complex species and on their symmetry. The intensity of non-hypersensitive transitions depends only on the symmetry of complex groups.
