Abstract

The fauna of deepsea herring of the Indian Ocean was revised, and three species were identified: B. elongata Trunov, 1975, B. hoskynii Alcock, 1891, and B. malayana Weber, 1913. Of these, B. elongata and B. malayana were reliably described in this water area for the first time. The revision of materials that were mentioned earlier in the open nomenclature revealed no new species among them. The geographic and bathymetric distribution of these species was significantly refined. An identification key to the species of the Indo-West Pacific is given. It is shown that the species of this family, which is considered monotypic, are clearly divided into two groups, and their status is clarified.
