Mesozoic Gall Midges (Diptera, Cecidomyioidea) with a Description of a New Genus and Species from the Santonian Amber of Taimyr (Ugolyak)

Abstract

Mesozoic gall midges are known as imprints from Late Jurassic of Transbaikalia and from Lower Cretaceous Levantine (Barremian) and Spanish (Albian), Upper Cretaceous Burmese (Cenomanian) and Vendean (Turonian), Taimyr from Yantardakh (Santonian), and Canadian (Campanian) amber. The first known specimen of a gall midge from Ugolyak (Taimyr Peninsula) is studied. A new genus and species, Ugolyakomyia rautianae Fedotova et Perkovsky gen. et sp. nov., which belongs to the tribe Aprionini of the subfamily Micromyinae (Lestremiidae), is described. The new genus is close to Cretomycophyla, from which it is distinguished by the wing venation pattern, flagellomeres length and shape, 3-segmented palps, very small compact body that is shorter than wings, proportions and ratio of sizes of thorax, abdomen and tarsi, rounded base of the genitalia and absence of claws on the gonostyles. Species composition of gall midges in the Mesozoic localities, including two Early Cretaceous and three Late Cretaceous ambers, has been analyzed: 21 species of 21 genera, and 12 tribes of the families Lestremiidae and Cecidomyiidae, were found in these samples, with the majority found in Taimyr (10 species of 10 genera) and Canadian (4 species of 4 genera) amber.
