Paleontological Journal Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Abstract

The largest East European scylacosaurid therocephalian Julognathus crudelis gen. et sp. nov. is described based on materials from the middle Permian locality of Sundyr-1, Mari El Republic, Russia. Julognathus occupied the niche of the largest predator within the Sundyr tetrapod community, forming a trophic match with the herbivorous tapinocephalian.

Notes

  1. Late Paleozoic and Mesozoic nonmarine tetrapod communities are distinctly structured into three blocks: dominant, subdominant and aquatic (Olson, 1966; Sennikov, 1995, 2006). The dominant block was formed by terrestrial herbivorous tetrapods and the carnivores that specialized on them. The subdominant block was composed of relatively small terrestrial amphibians and reptiles which fed on small invertebrates. The aquatic block comprised tetrapods which fed on diverse aquatic organisms: plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. Each of these blocks formed a separate trophic pyramid which hardly intersected with the trophic pyramids of the other blocks.
