Abstract

Spatial distribution of the click beetle Adrastus pallens (F.) in a typical agricultural landscape of Northwest Russia and the reasons for high abundance of this species in the grain-grass-tilled crop rotation fields were studied. Perennial grasses, which annually occupied 2 out of 7 fields in the crop rotation system, were of great importance in maintaining high abundance of A. pallens due to the high content of organic matter and basic mineral nutrients in their soils. The highest densities of A. pallens were recorded in potato plantings following 2 years of cultivation of perennial grasses and heavily infested with couch grass. The use of spring rapeseed as the predecessor crop did not considerably decrease the density of A. pallens larvae in potato plantings but increased the share of this species in the click beetle assemblage. The new-generation adults of A. pallens usually appeared in the fields during the last third of June, but their emergence shifted to the middle third of June in dry and warm weather and to the middle third of July in cool weather.
