Synopsis of the Host Plants of the Palaearctic Jewel Beetles of the Tribe Acmaeoderini (Coleoptera, Buprestidae: Polycestinae)

Abstract

An up-to-date synopsis of the host plants of the Palaearctic species of the jewel beetle tribe Acmaeoderini is presented. Larval host plants are currently known for 166 species (60.1% of the Palaearctic fauna), and adult host plants – for 115 species (42% of the Palaearctic fauna). Larval hosts are first reported for 27 species, and new host plants are established for several other species. The host plant associations of Acmaeoderini on the generic, subgeneric and species-group levels are discussed. Analysis of the trophic associations of anthophilous adults did not reveal any strict specificity toward host flowers on both species and higher taxa levels. Larval host plant associations are more diverse in the genus Acmaeoderella than in Acmaeodera and Xantheremia; the hosts of Microacmaeodera are still poorly known. Among the larval hosts, the representatives of Fabaceae (74 acmaeoderine species), Fagaceae (23), Rosaceae (19), Apiaceae (19), Anacardiaceae (19), Moraceae (17), and Asteraceae (16 species) are clearly predominant. Although for many species only a single larval host plant is reported, available data for the well-studied species imply the polyphagy as the principal trophic mode of Acmaeoderini. Among their hosts, the arboreous and semi-arboreous plants are dominating while many species of the genus Acmaeoderella feed on herbaceous plants. The vast majority of Acmaeoderini are trophically associated with Angiospermae – Dicotyledones, while the larvae of only a few species feed on the conifers or on both conifers and angiosperms.
