The mutagenic activities of four aminoazo compounds with different carcinogenicities for rat liver in the Ames test

Abstract

Mutagenicity in the bacterial Ames test was compared using four aminoazo compounds (which were previously studied by other researchers relative to carcinogenicity for the rat liver) for the activation of liver enzymes. It was found that all of them demonstrate mutagenic activity under the test conditions; however, this does not correlate quantitatively with the sensitivity of rats to its hepatocarcinogenic effect. Thus, the most active carcinogen (3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene) induces almost 2.5 times fewer mutations than the weakly carcinogenic ortho-aminoazotoluene and exactly the same level as the completely noncarcinogenic N,N-diethyl-4-aminoazobenzene.
