Abstract

Japan’s economic links with the world economy have been significantly influenced by trade policy since the postwar period when Japan benefited from General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and World Trade Organization (WTO)-led waves of trade liberalisation. As trade barriers fell, Japanese international trade grew rapidly and outward investment created a global sales and distribution network for exports, while also ensuring a more stable supply chain for imports of resources, energy and intermediate goods for processing in Japan.
