Abstract

Books have a central place in culture, but the twenty-first century has been marked by recurrent discussions about their future in an age of digitization and global entertainment structures. Literary culture is in flux, and an increasingly dominant force is emerging: the new literary middlebrow. This study has defined and described the new literary middlebrow, offering insights into the influence its tastemakers wield on reading in contemporary society.
