Abstract
This book has examined the challenges, and ultimate power shift, in Catholic church-state relations in America, a result of clerical sexual abuse revelations over the last decade and a half. Traditionally, religion and government, as the two critical institutions in this country, have maintained a tenuous balance of power between the sacred and the secular. However, in the series of battles that ensued over priestly molestations and that have affected certain aspects of church-state relations, a different political rapport now exists: the state has tipped the scales and gained the upper hand in its relationship with the Catholic Church.
