Abstract
On the eve of the 2012 general election the electoral map favored President Obama, who was predicted to win 243 electoral votes, 186 of which were from “solid” states, 57 were “leaning” his direction. Romney was predicted to win 206 electoral votes, 170 of which were solid and 36 were leaning.1 The election came down to 8 swing states: Florida (26 electoral votes), Ohio (18), Virginia (13), Wisconsin (10), Colorado (9), Iowa (6), and New Hampshire (4). Romney needed to win nearly all of these states to reach 270 with Florida and Ohio being critical. Obama won them all. The final outcome was evident early. Television networks called the election for Obama at 11:10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
