Abstract
Social networks are links between people based on common interests rather than on kinship. These networks meet needs that nuclear and extended families do not and cannot. Involvement in a community provides social support, and is therefore protective of mental health, whether or not one lives in a family (Cacioppo and Patrick, 2008).
